Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to the most common questions about Redactorr.

General Questions

Q: Where does detection and redaction run?

A: Detection and redaction run in your browser. Original sensitive values stay local during detection and redaction. Optional Vault, sharing, and AI workflows use processed or reviewed redacted context when you choose.

Q: How accurate is the detection?

A: Redactorr uses multi-layer detection with format verification and context analysis to minimise missed detections and false positives. Detection covers hundreds of patterns for Australian and international identifiers.

Q: What file formats are supported?

A: We support:

  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Word documents (.docx)
  • Excel spreadsheets (.xlsx)
  • PDF files (text-based PDFs)
  • Log files (.log)
  • Most code file formats

Q: Do you support handwritten text or scanned images?

A: Not as broad production support yet. Text-layer PDFs and measured born-digital formats are the launch-safe path. Scanned-page and photo OCR are active product directions, and handwritten forms require a separate handwriting recognition gate before we claim support.

Q: What happens to my redaction maps?

A: Vault v1 stores processed redaction sessions and safe token summaries. Token-to-original maps stay local to the redaction workflow unless a separately reviewed encrypted export is used.

Q: Can I undo a redaction?

A: Yes. Use the "Restore from Redaction Map" feature to reverse redactions. Upload your redacted document and its corresponding map, and Redactorr will restore the original values.

Q: Can multiple people collaborate on redaction?

A: Yes, through Secure Share. Redact a document, generate an encrypted share link, and send it to collaborators. They can view the redacted version and restore original values using the decryption key.

Pricing and Plans

Q: Is there a free plan?

A: Yes. The free plan lets you redact up to 5 documents per month at no cost. No credit card required.

Q: What is included in the Pro plan?

A: Pro (A$99/month) includes:

  • Unlimited document redaction
  • PDF processing
  • Custom detection patterns
  • All Australian identifier detection
  • Industry-specific detection (36 industries)
  • Priority support

Q: What is included in the Team plan?

A: Team (A$199/month, 3 seats included) includes:

  • All Pro features
  • Shared pattern libraries
  • Team-level analytics
  • Admin controls
  • Additional seats available at A$69/seat/month

Q: Can I cancel anytime?

A: Yes. Cancel anytime from your Settings page. You will retain access until the end of your billing period.

Security and Privacy

Q: How do you ensure my data is secure?

A: Through the browser-local detection and redaction boundary: 1. Detection and redaction run in your browser 2. Original sensitive values stay local during that step 3. Vault stores processed sessions and safe summaries when you choose 4. AI Assistant receives reviewed redacted context, not raw original document text

Q: Does Redactorr help with Australian Privacy Act compliance?

A: Redactorr can support Australian Privacy Act review workflows by keeping original sensitive values local during detection and redaction. It is not a legal compliance attestation.

See our Security Architecture article for details.

Q: Can I use Redactorr for regulated data?

A: Redactorr can help prepare documents containing personal information, health records, financial data, and other regulated categories for later workflows. You should still follow your organisation's policies and consult legal counsel for specific compliance advice.

Q: What happens if I lose my encryption key?

A: Encryption keys are generated locally and not stored on our servers. If you lose a key, encrypted data cannot be recovered. Always store keys securely — a password manager is recommended.

Features and Functionality

Q: Can I create custom detection patterns?

A: Yes. Pro and Team plans allow custom patterns. Define format rules to detect your organisation's unique ID formats, product codes, or internal identifiers.

Q: Does Redactorr work offline?

A: Partially. The core redaction engine works offline after initial load. Features requiring internet (breach checking, Secure Share) need a connection.

Q: Can I whitelist specific values?

A: Yes. Click "Whitelist" next to any detection to exclude it from redaction. Whitelist rules are saved per session and can be exported.

Q: Can I redact only specific types of data?

A: Yes. Use the filter controls in the Detections panel to enable or disable categories. Only selected categories will be redacted.

Troubleshooting

Q: Why is detection slow for large files?

A: Large files are processed in chunks. Try:

  • Breaking files into smaller pieces
  • Using text extraction for PDFs before redaction
  • Closing other browser tabs to free memory

Q: Why are some patterns not detected?

A: Check:

  • Detection mode (try a more sensitive setting)
  • Category filters (ensure the relevant category is enabled)
  • Custom patterns (verify your format is correct)

Contact support if patterns are consistently missed.

Q: Why does my PDF look different after redaction?

A: PDF processing regenerates the document from extracted text. Formatting may change. For layout-preserving redaction, try:

  • Exporting to Word first, then redacting
  • Using visual redaction (black boxes over text)

Q: Can I reset my workspace?

A: Yes. Go to Settings > Workspace > Reset. This clears all detections, redaction maps, and custom patterns. Whitelist rules and preferences are preserved.
